A New Farm Designed for Inclusion

Thanks to the generous support of The MacRobert Trust, a new farming initiative—Inclusive Farm Scotland at MacRobert—will soon launch in Tarland, Aberdeenshire. The Trust has provided land and buildings, enabling the creation of a farm designed by, and for, people with disabilities and diverse needs.

This new site will follow the successful model developed at Inclusive Farm’s original location in Bedfordshire. The Scottish farm is also transitioning into a Community Interest Company, helping to ensure its long-term sustainability and community focus.

Proven Success in Bedfordshire

Founded in January 2021 by Mike Duxbury and Ness Shillito, Inclusive Farm has helped students with a wide range of needs build confidence and learn valuable skills through weekly hands-on experiences in agriculture.

Mike, who lost his sight at the age of six, was recently appointed Chief Executive Officer of the new Scottish farm. He’s passionate about expanding this opportunity north of the border.

“90% of blind people, and 78% of autistic people, are unemployed – but it doesn’t have to be this way,” Mike said.

“We’ve seen the powerful impact of teaching skills like animal husbandry. We’re excited to bring those same benefits to Scotland.”

A Partnership with Purpose

Mike shared his excitement about working alongside The MacRobert Trust to create an environment that empowers rather than limits.

“This isn’t just about farming—it’s about putting people in the driving seat. Too often, disabled people are told what they need. We’re determined to let their voices lead the way.”

The new farm is now seeking like-minded partners and sponsors to help with its continued development.

A Shared Vision for Inclusive Agriculture

Rear Admiral Chris Hockley CBE, DL, Chief Executive Officer of The MacRobert Trust, voiced his support:

“Inclusive Farm’s mission aligns with our values. One of our key charitable aims is to support agriculture—especially projects that expand access and understanding of the opportunities it offers.

We’re thrilled to support this initiative and believe it will make a meaningful difference across Scotland.”

A Personal Mission for Jenna Ross OBE

Dr Jenna Ross OBE, Director of Inclusive Farm Scotland at MacRobert, also highlighted her personal connection to the project:

“My family has farmed in Aberdeenshire for generations, and my younger brother Duncan—who was registered blind at birth—has struggled to find a clear path into agriculture.

This project allows us to co-create something truly empowering for others in similar positions.”

She also congratulated Mike on his appointment as CEO:

“No one is more qualified or passionate about creating a fairer, more inclusive future in farming.”
